The night was as dark as ink. Chen Fan crouched in a corner of the abandoned ancestral hall, carefully unrolling a yellowed silk scroll in the thin moonlight filtering through the cracks.
The scroll bore no words, only a fragmentary star chart. The moment his fingertip touched the chart, a cool, gentle current surged through his limbs, and something deep in his mind seemed to shatter with a roar.
"The Nine Heavens scroll... it has chosen me?" he murmured, disbelief written all over his face.
From afar came the night watchman's wooden clapper. Chen Fan tucked the scroll against his chest and vanished into the darkness. From this night on, his life would change forever.
